Pirate Paddlers Dragon Boat Team

Ian Paul had a dream. (Though it wasn't a well conceived dream, it was a dream.). He wanted to put the wildest bunch of cutthroats and thieves this side of the Caribbean in a Dragon Boat. Train them to kidnap and ravage, loot and pillage. Show no mercy and leave nothing behind. He recruited from near and far. From the highest mountain tops to the lowest valleys. He traveled all over this vast country and we are what he came up with. I can see why he hits the bottle from time to time.

The Pirates Dragon Boat Team, formed in April 2005 is the newest addition to the Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club. Dragon boating is the worlds fastest growing water sport, with each boat having a co-ed crew of 20 paddlers 1 drummer and 1steersperson. When we aren't pillaging and ravaging, you will find us twice a week practicing on Harrison Lake. Being a novice team, the first few practices are a challenge and a struggle. But with each passing stroke the team gets abit faster, abit stronger and abit more in focus. Please read on and please come back as often as you like. This is our team and this is our story.

Dragon Boat History

Dragon boat racing began more than 2000 years ago on the banks of the life-sustaining rivers in the valleys of southern China as a fertility rite to ensure plentiful crops. The first participants were superstitious and held their own celebration on the fifth day of the of the fifth lunar month of the Chinese calendar (summer solstice). This time of year was traditionally associated with disease and death; a dark and evil time. The race was held to avert misfortune and encourage the rains needed for prosperity - and the object of their worship was the dragon. The most venerated of Chinese zodiac deities, the dragon of Asia has traditionally been a symbol of water. It is said to rule the rivers and seas and dominate the clouds and rains. The first races were meant to mock dragon battles staged in order to awaken the hibernating Heavenly Dragon. Sacrifices were made to the dragon sorcerers.  Humans, the cleverest and most powerful of all beings were the original sacrifices. Even much later, when a rower or an entire team fell into the water they would receive no assistance because it was believed to be wrong to interfere with the will of the gods.

It's All Over For This Year What A Way To End The Season. What's better than making the medal round? How about getting Bronze in a medal round. Congrats goes out to The Pirates as they fought long and hard and won Bronze in the Emerald Division in Kelowna over the weekend. After a disappointing second race on Saturday, the team banded together and put on a great performance during both races on Sunday to bring Bronze back to Chilliwack. Well done team.

The Pirates would also like to congratulate all the Chilliwack teams for a wonderful showing on the weekend. We have a very strong club and we all should be very proud.

One more thank you is in order. Thank You to Bonnie from Elephant and Castle for her help over the weekend. It was an pleasure paddling with you.

Until next year....Happy paddling.

P.S. There were no ducks harmed in the making of this website
.

Thank You Ian On behalf of all the Pirates, I would like to give a big and well deserved THANK YOU to Ian Paul for all his guidance and inspiration during our first year as a team. It is because of him that we did so well and learned so much.

You turned 22 people from all walks of life and all different backgrounds into a team. You taught us how to paddle and how to hold hard. You showed us the difference between The Whole Boat and Hold The Boat. You gave us hope when we faltered and you gave us praise when we needed it. But most of all you turned us into Pirates.

So from Pattie, Adam, Janik, Pash, Scott, Angela, Teg, France, Karin, Sue, Katrina, Doc, Lori, Robbie, Cathy, Jim, Cory, Christin, Charmain, Sue, Eddie and Jodi we thank you Ian.

You made us paddle together, pirates forever. I do hope we lived up to your expectations.

Taiwanese Dragon Boat Festival We Made The Medal Round . You have to learn to walk before you can run. The Pirates took a giant step forward last weekend in Vancouver. Competing against some very experienced paddlers, The Pirates made it into the medal round in C Group. This is by far the best showing of our young group. Determination, timing and commitment paddled hand in hand and allowed us to challenge in the medal round. Though no medal was awarded that day, the group held its collective heads high and was proud of the accomplishment. Well Done Pirates.

Cultas Lake Regatta We Did It, We Did It, We Did It, Yeah. What's better than a nice red ribbon? How about a nice blue ribbon. A hearty Hip Hip Hurray go out to the Lady Pirettes who, with the incredible help of management took the Osprey Final division title (first in their division, fourth over all) at the Cultas Lake Regatta on Saturday. All kidding aside, the Pirettes came together as a team and paddled four incredible races. All the races were extremely competitive. Some of the races were so close that first and second place had to be timed to within one one-hundredth of a second to decide the winner. With waves reaching as high as 60 feet (well if you add up all the little waves and then multiply that number by the four races that they ran...it might come out to 6o feet), the brave Pirettes paddled with power and conviction and came away with the blue ribbon. A special thank you goes to Adam and Janik for keeping the ladies on course and getting them to the finish line. A double special thank you goes out to the honorary Pirettes that helped round out our boat. Gail , Sue and Lea from S.O.A.R in Ft. Langley, Debbie H, Debbie D, and Desarae from the Thunderstrokers, Keng from Gung Haggis and Jeana from The Elephant and Castle. Another special Thank You needs to go out to Docs daughter Kim for all her help in the boat. It was a pleasure and honor to have you all on our team. Thank you for all your help.

A triple special thank you also has to go out to Adam and Katrina for opening their home and inviting the Pirettes in. A wonderful BBQ and victory party was enjoyed by all. Thanks again.

Becoming a Pirate Yo Ho Yo Ho a pirates life for me. So you want to paddle, pillage and party do ya? Well you have come to the right place. we've been pillaging, paddling and partying since April. And let me tell you, we know what we're doing. Please contact Ian for more information.

Pirate Song
A couple of hard working pirates have come up with a wee bit of a Pirate singing song. Everyone should try it out and see what they think. It is a work in progress and nothing is written in stone. Please let us know what you think.

Pirate Name
What's in a name? Please take a few minutes and get yourself a true authentic Pirate name. (Well, as authentic as we can find..but then again we didn't look THAT hard.) When you are done please email Ian and let him know how you made out.

Bocce Ball Championships.
Though no Crown was awarded and no Prize cheque claimed, the coveted Pirate Bocce Ball Championships were held Saturday night after the Cultas Lake Regatta at the home of Adam and Katrina. The competition was stiff and incredibly close (...ok... the only thing stiff was Frances drink). With games going into the wee hours of the evening and with barely enough light to see the ball, the amazing team of Scott and Angela were pronounced the victors. The couple accepted their prize with the style and grace expected of champions. "How can someone with that much alcohol in him still stand?", "How can he see with his sunglasses on?" and "She can do so much better." were just some of the comments from the crowd. Scott was reported to have said, "Who the hell is jack, and why the hell do I have to throw him?" during the final game. Sadly, no photographs were taken at the request of the home owners. Good choice.
